National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) November is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. Why do it? For 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, you get to lock away your inner editor, let your imagination take over, and just create!

NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program (YWP) takes that joyful, focused approach to creative writing and makes it accessible to young writers, educators, and families. How does it work? 

  • Participants aged 17-and-under (18 is okay if still in high school) can sign up for accounts at ywp.nanowrimo.org.
  • To work on a novel, you can set a word-count goal and try to reach it by the end of the month.
  • The Young Writers Program allows participants to set individualized goals. 1,000 words? 10,000? 100,000??? It's up to you!

How NaNoWriMo Library Group Works

  • We'll meet virtually every Tuesday in November with the goal of supporting each other in completing a "novel" (defined for our purposes as a fictional book with chapters, regardless of the length) by the end of the month.
  • The age range is wide in this group, so constructive feedback will be limited and we'll focus on supporting each other in our individual writing goals.
  • Each session, we'll do a fun 10 minute exercise as a group to help us brainstorm for our novels.  Then, we'll write independently for 35 minutes, and come back and share for the last 15 minutes.  No need to share if you don't want to!
  • At the end of the month, you'll have the option to have your book bound for free so you can have it as a keepsake.  If you'd like, a copy can also be added to the collection at the Nelsonville Library.
