Critics acclaim this 1932 novel as possibly the finest fictional work that Scotland produced in the 20th century.  It focuses on a farm
family in a remote rural district of Scotland, and how the effects of
agrarian modernization and World War I not only unravel the ancient
traditions of farming life, but also unravel the members of that family,
socially, economically and psychologically. Throughout it all is the
persevering heroine, Chris Guthrie.  Our
guest lecturer and discussion leader is Visiting Assistant Professor,
Dr. Brian J. McAllister of Ohio University's Department of English.Registration
begins in early May.  The first 15 people to register and commit to
attending all four sessions will receive a free copy of the book.Sponsored by the Friends of the Athens Public Library.
