Willa Cather was one of the finest American authors in the school of realism. My Ántonia is widely considered the first literary masterpiece in her career as a novelist. A work of historical fiction, it evokes an already bygone chapter in her own time, depicting the days of the early European settlement of America's Great Plains. Her story involves families of both American and immigrant settlers in a challenging but rewarding agrarian existence, and depicts a life-long friendship, beginning in childhood, between Ántonia Shimerdas and the orphan Jim Burden, and is intimately told in the first person voice. Experience the travails and triumphs of the pioneering farmers whose greatest wealth was each other.
Our guest discussion leader is Dr. Marilyn Atlas, Professor of English at Ohio University.
