The Prevent T2 program is a year-long lifestyle change program for individuals that have pre-diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes, or who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes as determined by the score on the Pre-Diabetes Risk Screen. This program aims to help individuals PREVENT the onset of Type 2 Diabetes by supporting the process of lifestyle change over the course of a year. The sessions will help you make lifestyle changes that will result in weight loss and increased activity. The program has been proven to be so effective in reducing the risk for Type 2 diabetes that the Centers for Disease Control is encouraging the program be offered nationally. To get the most benefit from the program, the participant needs to attend all the sessions. If you are unable to attend a session, we can arrange a way to make up that session, but it is encouraged to make it to the majority of the sessions. You will be given tools to help you be successful: a binder to hold all your class materials; Calorie King books to track your calorie and fat gram intake; pedometers to track activity; exercise band, Keeping Track booklets to record information in and recipes, which you will be able to taste. The Diabetes Insitute at OU has received a grant from the American Association of Diabetes Educators in association with CDC and the Athens Health Department to help cover costs of the program for qualified participants.Sessions will consist of one-hour long discussion plus ½ hour for exercise or food demos optional at sessions. For more information, to check eligibility, or register, please contact Karen Bailey at 740-566-4777 or baileyk@ohio.edu
