In 1855, Victorian social novelist Elizabeth Gaskell published a novel of
contemporary struggles between labor and management in the cotton mill
industry of northern England, as seen through the eyes of a woman raised
in the country's south. Gaskell provides a humanitarian and early
feminist voice for the cause of social justice and the struggle of the
poor to make their lives and virtues understood, especially to those who
grew rich upon their sweat in the mills. Our guest speaker and discussion leader is Dr. Heather Edwards, Associate Lecturer at Ohio University's Department of English.  Please
register at the library front desk. The first 15 people to sign up will
receive a free copy of the book, courtesy of the Friends of the Athens
Public Library.
