Event Details
Ernest Hemingway famously said that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain planted the seed of modern literature. The new book, James, by multiple-prize-winning author Percival Everett, shifts the point of view from the runaway boy Huck to his adult companion, the slave-fugitive Jim. This parallel interpretation of their shared adventures, including Jim's perspective and a realistic portrayal of Jim's independent agency, creates a liberating new appreciation for the fictive account first imagined by Twain. Percival Everett's James has already been hailed as a new classic, equal in conception to the original book it reinterprets. Please join us to experience a literary voice from our time forming an authentic African American response to this central legacy of American literature.
Please also have read Mark Twain's precursor novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for comparative purposes.
Registration is required.
Our guest discussion leader is Ron Luce, a retired professor of literature, who is also a published author in his own right.
