Program Description

Event Details

Did you know that the Smithsonian Institution’s very first publication was a book on Ohio mounds? In 1848, E. G. Squier and E. H. Davis issued their classic Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, the first important scholarly work on the mounds of Ohio and beyond.

The Friends of The Plains Mounds March speaker, Jeffrey Wilson has conducted exhaustive research on Squier and Davis’s original sources, surveys, and drafts. Wilson will present a talk on the result of his research, a vastly-expanded reissue of the original Ancient Monuments featuring numerous new illustrations, biographies, maps, and other materials.
