African American Pioneer Women: An Historical Exhibit

This exhibit highlights the multicultural community of Tabler Town (aka, Kilvert, Ohio), and expresses its durable community identity, heritage and regional history. One display case features “Pioneer Women of Color in Athens, County”. The other features “Women of Color: Domestic Housekeepers in Athens County, Ohio”. Women of mixed heritage from Tabler Town played an important role in the life of their families, rural communities, as well as in the economy of professional domestic service in the cities of Athens and Marietta, commuting from their town by train. This exhibit will showcase artifacts, vintage photographs, and historical documents related to the women's experience, from pioneering days, through the Civil War, and on through the 20th century. The curator, David Butcher, is the proud son of this historic community. This exhibit showcases just one layer of Butcher's growing mini-museum, which is anchored by his family's roots, extending over two centuries in Ohio and back to Revolutionary Days. Butcher's piecing together of family and regional history is a labor of love.
