Charles W. Chestnutt was an African American author who lived in Cleveland, writing realist fiction and folktales in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was also a regular fiction contributor to the Atlantic Monthly. Our discussions will cover Chestnutt's controversial 1901 novel The Marrow of Tradition, which features a 1898 race riot and local government coup in
Wilmington, North Carolina, a story told from multiple character
perspectives. We'll also examine a selection of Chestnutt's short
fiction. Signup begins in January. The first 15 people will receive a free copy of the book. Our guest speaker is Dr. Paul Jones, the Sam and Susan Crowl Professor of Ohio University's Department of English.Sponsored by the Friends of the Athens Public Library.
