focuses on a farm family in a remote rural district of Scotland, and how
the effects of agrarian modernization and World War I not only unravel
the ancient traditions of farming life, but also unravel the members of
that family, socially, economically and psychologically. Throughout it
all is the persevering heroine, Chris Guthrie.  Our
