Published in 1924 and set during the Late British Empire and the fracturing of India during the 1910s and '20s, this Modernist novel is based on author E. M. Forster's multiple experiences as both a traveler and a private secretary for a maharajah (an Indian prince). The plot pivots around an alleged crime and the judicial trial that follows, as well as attempts at genuine friendships between characters, despite imposed social barriers.
