Not just areligious document, the Bible is also one of the great works of world
literature. Originally written in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic (and
long only available to Western Europe in Latin), it
finally
received a complete translation into English during the
Renaissance under King James the First of England.
The best scholars
and poets of the day were recruited to bring about not only an
accurate translation, but one that fit the idioms of English while
also reflecting the verbal artistry of the original languages. Join
us for a literary discussion of selected readings from the King James
Version.
Registered
participants will receive reading assignments and questions via email
and are responsible for finding their own book copy. (Ask about
interlibrary loans as necessary.)
Guest speaker:
Dr. Beth Quitslund, Professor of English at Ohio University and
scholar of religious literature from Renaissance England.
