Event Details
From the origins of our republic to present-day U.S. politics, and defying both racism and sexism in securing the ballot for themselves, Black women led the way for greater equality for all Americans. From their quest to extend citizenship and voting rights via Constitutional amendment to their campaign for the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and today’s crusade against voter suppression, Black women have been in the vanguard of political change and the push to make the nation live up to its highest ideals. From Sojourner Truth and Ida B. Wells to Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, and Stacey Abrams, their lives, voices, and leadership have broken barriers and insisted on equality for all.
Our guest speaker is Dr. Katherine Jellison, Professor of History at Ohio University.
