The story was first published in the United Kingdom in The Strand Magazine for its December 1908 monthly issue, and was subsequently published in the United States in the 12 December 1908 issue of Collier's Weekly. It was one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's top-twenty favorite Sherlock Holmes stories out of the fifty-six he wrote.
