Program Description

Event Details

Musical performance in social settings figures importantly in both the novels of Janes Austen and in the life Austen actually lived.  Hear illustrative passages from Austen's works, learn about the broader culture of women and music in Georgian England, and discover how this music for domestic settings belonged to a larger cultural engagement with music for social purposes across Continental Europe, including Russia.

Our guest presenters will be Dr. Linda Zionkowski, editor of Women and Music in the Age of Austen and Professor of English at Ohio University, and Dr. Vladimir Marchenkov, Professor of Aesthetics in the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University.  Our guest musical performers will be Debra Rentz, Professor of Voice at the OU School of Music, and Emely Phelps, Artist-Teacher of Piano at the OU School of Music.  At the end of the presentation the British Country Dancers, under the direction of Anna Hess and accompanied by Bob Montalto on piano and Mark Barsamian on fiddle, will perform two dances from the era of Jane Austen.

Copies of Linda Zionkowski's new book will be available for purchase and author-signing after the presentation.
