Any mental illness, particularly one like schizophrenia, can have a devastating effect on family relationships. Co-authors of Marriage and Schizophrenia: Eyes on the Prize Andrew and Stephanie Downing chose to marry and have children in spite of a
full awareness that Andrew had already been diagnosed. The Downings will
discuss the challenge they faced and the tools they used in moving
Andrew into recovery: spirituality, non-confrontational communication,
fine-tuning of therapy and medication with specialists, the acceptance
of limitations, and work with NAMI. Books will be available for sale and signing.Co-Sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Friends of the Athens Public Library.
