Edinburgh, Scotland: A City in Transformation [A VIRTUAL PROGRAM]

Edinburgh is Scotland’s ancient capital, the seat of native kings and government. Today the city is a major European tourist attraction, and as Scottish national pride has grown, people have sought to remake it as one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Districts that once marked Edinburgh’s former identity as an industrial center and which housed the working poor are being razed and revamped for a more affluent cross-section of society and to serve the tourist industry. This process has slowed down, however, as Scotland’s economy has become troubled. Now Scots are fighting to save the remaining Victorian structures of its working-class heritage. A case in point is Edinburgh’s Fountainbridge neighborhood, where the actor Sean Connery grew up. Join cultural geographer, Professor Geoff Buckley of Ohio University, as he tells the story of a city and a special part of that city, to understand how global economic changes affect life on the ground in a lovely little corner of the world.
