The world is divided between tea culture and coffee culture, right? Wrong! In South America, many people prefer yerba mate as the beverage of choice to brighten their day. As with coffee and tea, special social customs and even paraphernalia have grown up surrounding this native drink.

This presentation will feature information on yerba mate and the culture that has embraced it, as well as exposition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to Yerba Mate: The Culture, Ceremony & Curiosities of South America's Favorite Tea, written by former Athens resident Marcia Lewandowski (Monday Creek Publishing).

Our guest speaker is certified herbalist and ecotourism director, Rebecca Wood. Representatives from The Farmacy will also be present to serve free samples.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Athens Public Library.
