Program Description

Event Details

The romance of Tristan and Iseult (or Isolde) is a classic love triangle involving a Cornish knight, an Irish Princess, and the knight's uncle, King Mark.  The unfortunate break of loyalty and honorable commitment to the King all begins with a mistakenly dispensed love potion.  This is a colorful story full of romantic vicissitudes, dating back to ancient Celtic times, but revived in the Middle Ages as one the major branches of the Arthurian Legend.  We will be reading the version by Meister Gottfried von Strassburg, who lived in the late 1100s and early 1200s, as rendered in modern English by A. T. Hatto: Tristan (Penguin Classics).

This is a two-part book club led by Professor Emerita and Medievalist scholar, Marsha Dutton.

Registration is required.
