Program Description
Event Details
Astronomy in the 19th and early 20th centuries was as exciting as it is now. Their instruments and knowledge were not as advanced as ours today, but the discoveries were coming fast and furious. There was much speculation about the size and nature of the cosmos, and what our neighboring planets and the Moon were like. In this program we will learn about those heady times, what it was like to be an astronomer in those days, and how their telescopes worked. If you enjoy this program, please come out later to the Fecker Telescope on the Ridges (starting at 10pm) to scan the skies with the presenters of this program. Our guest speakers are George Eberts & Tom O'Grady, Instructors at Ohio University Department of Physics and Astronomy. Tom O'Grady is also Executive Director of the Southeast Ohio History Center.Sponsored by the Friends of the Athens Public Library. This event takes place in the Raymond C. Cook Meeting Room.
