Beginning Pysanky: Decorating Eggs with Wax and Dye (A Craft To-Go)

Learn a centuries-old technique for decorating eggs for your favorite spring festival!

Kits containing essential tools and instructions will be distributed on Friday, March 26th, at the library one week prior to the April 2nd class video release to give you time to gather other supplies needed. Please call once you are at the library on March 26th so we can bring the kit out to you, as we will still be offering curbside service only.

Once registered, you will be sent a link to the video tutorial, which will become available on Friday, April 2nd. In this tutorial, librarian Erin will show you the basics of creating Pysanka eggs. Similar in principle to batik, the basis of this art form is ‘writing’ on a dyed egg’s surface with beeswax. (Indeed, the word pysanka comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, "to write.") Traditional artists repeat this process of waxing and dyeing many times before a candle flame reveals the result: an intricate design in multiple colors that appears to be painted on.
