Program Description

Event Details

A family-friendly workshop to learn the art of growing mushrooms at home. Kids welcome!

**Please note: All juvenile participants must have an accompanying parent or legal guardian present with them during the workshop.

Please register only one individual per family. We will be sharing logs so other family members are welcome to join the registered participant on the day of the program.

Participants in this workshop can expect to learn the basics of growing Shiitake mushrooms on hardwood logs. Everyone will also get to participate in the hands-on experience of inoculating logs with Shiitake wood plug spawn, into pre-drilled logs. Each family will leave the workshop with an inoculated log to take home, as well as the knowledge of how to properly care for it to produce mushrooms. The cultivation of other gourmet and medicinal mushrooms will also be discussed.

Presenter Bio:

Andy Gedeon & Anna Kelly are the founders of Soulshine Acres, a forest-farm specializing in growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. Focused on sustainable practices for obtaining logs and growing mushrooms in harmony with the land, they hope to benefit both the environment and the people of Athens. You can find them selling seasonal fresh mushrooms and mushroom tinctures year-round at the Athens Farmers Market. They are firm believers that mushrooms are not only a vital food source for our community, but also a rich source of medicines for the mind and body. Sharing the knowledge of how to cultivate mushrooms is a way of empowering people and providing them with food security.
