Program Type:History & Genealogy
So you think all the African American jazz greats came out of "special" places like New Orleans, Kansas City, Chicago and New York City? Actually talented Black musicians have answered the call of the Muse of Jazz across the country, including (unbeknownst to many) from the Buckeye State. Think we're pulling your leg? Well, what about Nancy Wilson, the great jazz singer, who was born in Chillicothe and grew up in Columbus? What about gifted jazz pianist and composer, George Russell, born and raised in Cincinnati? And then, what about Joe Henderson, the virtuoso jazz tenor sax-player, born and raised in Lima? The list goes on and on, and the stories of these great Ohioans in the jazz universe will fascinate. Join us for an informative presentation replete with images and sounds!
Our guest speaker is Dr. Art Cromwell, retired professor of Media Studies, and jazz aficionado extraordinaire!
