Event Details

Help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! Events are planned in and around Athens during the whole month of April. Check https://ohiouearthday.weebly.com/ for details and updates.

10-11:00am: Intro to Native American Plants (for all ages)

Join local plant expert Frank Porter to learn about Ohio's native plants and their benefits, followed by an opportunity to visit the grounds of the Athens Visitor's Bureau to assist in a planting party. Their gardens contain 300+ native and endangered species and are a recognized Monarch Watch Station.

About our speaker: After a career as a Native American scholar, Dr. Frank W. Porter created Porterbrook Native Plants, growing hundreds of species native to Ohio, West Virginia and the surrounding states. Although the nursery's now closed, Dr. Porter continues to collect seeds from interesting native plants in this region.

11-11:30am: Earth Day Family Storytime

Join us for a themed storytime to celebrate our one-and-only planet home and what we can do to care for it today and into the future.

11:45am-12noon: Official Ground-Breaking Ceremony for Natural Playspace

Have you noticed construction going on behind the library? Be our guest at an official groundbreaking for our future playspace designed and built by Fern Hollow Farm, LLC that will focus on permaculture, plus sensory and science fun for all ages.

Athens Beautification 2020 volunteers will be helping with various playspace projects throughout the day like starting a new earth dome and pollinator planter garden.

1:00pm: Library EV Charging Stations Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

It's official: You can now access 24-hour charging stations for free at our Athens location! Attend the ribbon-cutting and learn more about our 4 new Level 2 stations and how to use them.

*Funded by a grant from the AEP OHIO Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Incentive Program. ACPL received $39,050 from AEP, which is 98% of the project cost.

Also brought to you by Rural Action and Greenlots.

2-3pm: Biology in Your World Series (Topic TBA)
